The main task of biological filter media is to provide the best colonization conditions for the bacterial cultures, so that a bacterial lawn develops after a short time. The bacteria feed on dirt particles of all kinds and convert substances that are critical for the aquarium. After the initial cleaning process with the mechanical filter media (e.g. Eheim mech or mechpro), the biological filtration is the most important. It provides clear, healthy water and stable water values. That is why we have invested a lot of research work in the development of biological filter media.

Substratpro consists of bead-shaped sintered glass. The spherical shape provides a high bulk density. This means that the entire volume of the filter (filter baskets or modules) can be used. The optimal surface area of ​​the beads also ensures intensive colonization of the important purification bacteria. Due to the high number of bacteria, peak nitrite loads are reduced more easily and the maintenance intervals of the filter material are longer.
